We learn how to manage our time!
Thank you to Past President Liz May for Facilitating the meeting on April 18th!.  The members and guests present heard an inspiring message from Patti Sabla on how to manage our time.  Patti outlined the many pitfalls of “time wasters” and tips on managing time.  We also heard a GREAT Vocational Talk by member Sharon Beach.  She was a VERY busy woman with a varied career!  We love these Vocational Talks as it gives us an opportunity to learn more about our new members.  Community Service Chair Katie Zimmerman outlined our two upcoming Community Service project needs with the West Maui Greenway event on Saturday and the Beach Clean up on Sunday.  Our Social Chair, Nina, shared the details about the April Club social, which will be held next Tuesday evening at Pi Artisan Pizza.  Membership Chair Jim Fahnestock shared details of our upcoming Club Assembly, which will focus on Membership.  All are encouraged to bring friends to this social where Happy Hour prices will be in effect  This assembly is set for our 5th meeting in May.  Jim also shared information about his testimony on behalf of Malama Maui Nui, our partner in the monthly Recycling event.  Interim President Joanne shared some “secret details” about the next meeting on May 2nd where our speaker will be 4-time Grammy Award winner Uncle George Kahumoku, Jr.

Local Author Jill Engledow Shares "The Story of Lahaina"
We had a great meeting to start 2017!  We had a number of visiting Rotarians and guests.  Nina Paolo shared her Vocational Talk and we were amazed at the number of leadership positions that she held while living in San Jose!  President Melissa told of the planning meeting coming up on Saturday for the St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser. Katie shared the sign up sheet for the monthly recycling event coming up on Satuday January 21st.  Jill Engledow was our speaker and talked about her two newest books – “The Story of Lahaina” and the “History of Sugar on Maui”.  She shared much information about Lahaina and showed a number of unique photos that she found for both of her new books.  She answered many questions about how she researched both books and had books for sale at the conclusion of her talk.  There were three lucky winners of the Drawings – Jim Fahnestock, Sharon Beach and Joanne Laird.

Sherri Dodson presents Habitat for Humanity Information

We welcomed Sherri Dodson, Executive Director from Habitat for Humanity as our speaker at our meeting on Tuesday, November 2nd.  Sherri shared great information about the organization and the plans for building homes in West Maui.  After an informative video about the organization and talking about how they purchase land to build homes, she answered numerous questions about how we can assist in this effort.

We also learned during Happy/Sad Dollars that Past President Sandy Schneider will be leaving our club as she is relocating to Orlando, Florida for a new employment opportunity.  Sandy is currently serving as Community Service Chair and we are now seeking a member to take over this position.  Sandy will leave a big "puka" to fill - she will be greatly missed by all of us.

We also learned that the Kihei Elementary School Student Council Pennies for Polio Drive generated $1460 in funds.  Six classes topped the $100 mark in donations.  Members Phylecia Platte and Joanne Laird "burned out" a number of CoinStar machines around Maui getting all those coins counted.  One-fourth of the funds will go to Kihei Student Council for future projects.  The remainder will be given to our club for the End Polio Now Effort; this contribution takes us well past the $2650 each club is asked to contribute.

At the end of the meeting President Melissa asked members for ideas for our monthly socials.  Many new locations and ideas were shared and we are looking forward to new and exciting locales to gather together for food, fun and networking.

We celebrated our 2nd year Club Anniversary and August and September Birthdays with our "Birthday Cake Cookies" shared by Club Service Chair Joanne Laird.  DG Clint also recognized and celebrated our many Polio Champions which have helped take our End Polio Now Club Contributions to almost $2000.  DG Clint also presented President Melissa Fort with her PHF+4 Recognition pin and certificate.  All of us were moved by DG Clint's message to about his passion and commitment to Rotary.  His own personal story of being part of a Polio Immunization team in India gave us all a new insight on what it means to be a Rotarian.
