9 MEMBERS OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF LAHAINA SUNSET INVESTED “SWEAT EQUITY” FOR SENIORS

On a recent Saturday nine members of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset reported for volunteer duty at the Maui Food Bank.  The task was to pack over 500 food boxes in two hours time to be delivered to seniors on Molokai and other seniors on our island for the holidays.  Little did these eight members know that a huge amount of “sweat equity” that would go into this two-hour project when they joined 10 volunteers from other groups.
The “Box People” had a huge task of assembly and flattening over 500 boxes. The “Super Stuffers” VERY quickly inserted boxes of cereal to the assembled boxes and moved them to the conveyor belt.   It was hot and sweaty work.  Only the three volunteers over the age of 70 had a relatively easy task of inserting carry bags and holiday flyers into every box.  The Maui Food Bank staff moved like lightning loading the completed boxes onto pallets.  They kept a keen and helpful eye on us Assembly Line workers.  The assembly line moved so fast – remember the “I Love Lucy” episode where Lucy was on the candy assembly line – there we were!
To quote Past President Joanne Laird:  “I never moved so fast in a two-hour period in my life!  But it was so rewarding to see all of those stacked pallets ready to be delivered to our seniors in need!”
