52nd member inducted into the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset

During a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, Marianne Winfield became the 52nd member of the club. Marianne was sponsored by Past President Joanne Laird. The induction ceremony was officiated by Al Weiland, Assistant Governor for the Coastal Maui Rotary Clubs.

Before obtaining a high-school teaching credential at age 52, Marianne had a publishing career spanning three continents on a wide variety of subjects — from children’s books in her native South Africa to a motorcycle magazine in England, financial newsletters in Florida, medical textbooks in Michigan, and a financial website in California. In 2012, she and her husband Barry moved to Maui where she taught Freshman and Sophomore English at Lahainaluna High School for ten years. She retired in 2022 to support her husband’s successful recovery from a brain-stem stroke. They have since traveled to Japan, England, and Italy with a month-long road trip in Portugal planned for May, 2026.

Marianne has practiced Buddhism with a lay religious organization, Soka Gakkai International, and has volunteered on many of their publications. Her organizational leadership responsibilities have included district, chapter and national levels in Michigan and California. She presently serves as SGI-USA Lahaina District vice leader. Marianne also enjoys cooking, swimming, reading non-fiction, watching films, and corresponding with friends from all over the world.

What especially attracts her to Rotary International in these dark times is its focus on becoming “people with big hearts — people who remain strong and unshaken no matter what happens and who, rather than focusing on themselves, are concerned with helping and imparting hope to others.”
