Specialists for Maui Environmental Protection Department to speak at Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset meeting
Michelle Nuijen and Tess Herman will be co-speakers at the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset ‘s meeting at 5:30 pm on Tuesday September 20.  The meeting will be held at the Royal Ocean Terrace Restaurant at the Royal Lahaina Resort.
 
This presentation introduces the work of the Environmental Protection & Sustainability Division (EP&S) of the County of Maui (www.mauicounty.gov/eps). Housed within the Department of Environmental Management since 2016, EP&S guides and funds an increasing range of environmental initiatives from three Sections: Abandoned Vehicles & Metals, Recycling, and Environmental Programming.  They will explain in detail the operations of this department.
 
Nuijen holds a masters and a doctorate degree in Environmental Science, Sustainable Development from Utrecht University in the Netherlands and a bachelor’s in environmental studies from American Military University.  She has over ten years of work experience at the nexus of society and the environment in the areas of climate change adaptation, human rights, and responsible business in Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
 
Herman holds a Master of Science in Environmental Studies with a specialty in advanced waste management upgrading, as well as a Master of Science in Global Communications with a specialty in climate change communications. Over the past decade, Tess has either been an educator or professional researcher.
